As of 11:00 this morning, we had already completed all the work that John had anticipated us doing this week. We had finished all of the siding and soffit on Barb & Joe's house. Between the sodding, siding, and soffit, John thought he would've kept us busy until Thursday.
We began today by finishing up the final touches on the house, and then broke for an early lunch at 11. Joanne prepared hot dogs and beans for the group. The site was pretty fun overall. I got to work with Ian, John, Cat, and Alyson, as the five of us took on the task of installing the siding around the garage. John and Cat cut while myself, Ian, and Alyson installed - it was solid teamwork, and it came out pretty nice. Also, the day was made interesting at the end, when Dom decided to tap-dance on top of plywood and saw-horses. Hilarious. We then skipped the RB club because showering wasn't that pressing of a need, plus we had half of a work day left to enjoy the beach. Once we got back, our logistics group went out to do round 2 of food shopping, while I took a small recon crew to go to the Flagler Beach Fire Department and grab a permit for a nighttime bonfire on the beach. The rest of the afternoon was filled with people napping, reading, doing homework, and all other types of chillaxing. The only bummer is that it was pretty overcast for most of the day.
We had tacos for dinner and then began bonfire prep. Chelsea (one of the student leaders) and myself went down to the beach with two shovels that Paul had let us borrow. Unfortunately, we were dealing with high-tide, so we dug a 2-foot hole that was pretty close to the rocks, along with a nice sized moat in front of it for water protection. The group had collected scrap wood at the worksite the last two days, and carried it down to the beach in a tarp. We got an incredible fire going that was a little too awesome, so we put some sand on it to make sure the ambers didn't blow up to the dunes...helping us leave too much of a mark on the Flagler community. We had some s'mores, and good pictures, until the high tide totally overcame the barrier and put out our fire. Oh well, tide happens.
We came back to the church, gave some people time to shower/hang out, regrouped for a good conversation about being aware of homelessness, and then closed the night with two great games of mafia. The mafia went 2-0. I'm happy to report that I just got back from a late night shower, and the timer has been adjusted, so it was a perfect temperature.
Heading to a new construction site in a few hours. John offered us the day off, but of course we wanted to take on more. So we'll be heading to
Royal Palm Lane to start prepping a different house for it's wall-framing stage. We'll be doing the work that takes place between the foundation and the wall-framing. So laying the floor, lots of drilling, sawing, hammering, etc... .
Here's hoping for some sunshine.
